Embark on a full-day adventure exploring Iowa's winter ecology at one of our favorite spots for winter wandering — Whiterock Conservancy! With its 40+ miles of trails, Whiterock is an amazing example of Iowa's varying landscapes, from riverbeds and oak savannas, to limestone bluffs and sustainable agricultural fields. We'll spend the morning on a brisk, beautiful hike along the Middle Raccoon River. We'll stop at the Rustic 805 river cabin for a fireside lunch, including a basic backcountry fire building and safety demonstration.
After lunch, we'll continue our journey through the extensive trail network of Whiterock to learn about Iowa's winter ecology and how landscapes shift throughout the season, pick up practical winter skills like making a quick hot lunch over a fire, and Leave No Trace ethics for responsible outdoor activities. It's a hands-on, educational, and enjoyable day in the great outdoors!
