First Flight: Field Birding for Beginners

  • Terra Park 6400 Pioneer Parkway Johnston, IA, 50131 United States (map)

$25

Attended our Learn to Bird basics class? This walk is the perfect next step! Didn’t attend but still want to learn? Join us!

You know the birding basics — now it's time to put them into practice! Grab your binoculars and join us at Terra Park for a birding walk, where we'll take everything from the classroom outside and into the field.

This two-hour walk is designed for folks who are brand new to birding (or just getting started), so no experience needed — curiosity is the only requirement. We'll slow down and start training our eyes and ears to notice the incredible birds that are all around us.

On this walk, we'll practice:

  • Using binoculars effectively in the field

  • Spotting and identifying common local birds

  • Using field marks to tell species apart

  • Listening for bird calls and songs

  • Logging what we see

Spring is one of the best times of year to be outside with binoculars, and Terra Park is a beautiful place to start. Come ready to see your surroundings in a whole new way.

We have 12 pairs of binoculars to rent free of charge for participants who need them. If you don’ t have your own binoculars, select them during registration. If you do have your own binoculars, please bring them!

Registration is limited to 15 folks.
