The Art of Noticing: Nature Journaling Hike w/ Genevieve LaVelle

  • Zo-El Annett Woods 5689 Hempstead Place Prole, IA, 50229 United States (map)

$60

What if the goal wasn't to make something beautiful, but just to notice?

That's the heart of nature journaling. Join us at Zo-el Annett Woods in Warren County for a four-hour guided experience with Des Moines artist Genevieve LaValle, where we'll slow down, look closer, and document the natural world around us in real time. No artistic experience required—seriously!

Nature journaling isn't about producing a masterpiece. It's about capturing a moment — what you saw, what you heard, what made you stop and look twice. Using a mix of drawings, numbers, symbols, and written observations, you'll build a personal record of your time in nature that's entirely your own. It's part field science, part art practice, and accessible to anyone willing to show up and pay attention.

Here's what you can expect:

  • A guided hike through the beautiful Zo-el Annett Woods

  • Instruction on nature journaling techniques from Genevieve — no drawing experience needed

  • Time to slow down, breathe, and really connect with your surroundings

  • A snack lunch included

  • A practice you can take home and continue anywhere, anytime

All journaling materials provided. No prior art experience necessary.

Your guide for the day: Genevieve LaValle is a textile and fiber artist based in Des Moines, working out of her studio at Mainframe Studios. Genevieve predominately works in textile and fiber art creating narrative based rugs for the wall, but also draws many inspirations from nature and creates brightly colored landscapes. She's an avid drawer, loves to spend time outside with her pets, and is an experienced workshop host.

Registration is limited to 12 folks.
