What do you get when you combine the two best things in the world, pies and hikes? Pikes! Join Wander Women and Pie Bird Pies on the tastiest collaboration nature’s ever seen as we wander through our favorite parks in Central Iowa and enjoy Des Moines’ best pies! Seriously, if you haven’t tried Pie Bird Pies yet, you’re in for a life-changing treat.
For this pike, we’ll explore the beautiful Thomas Mitchell Park in Polk Co.! This hidden gem features a lovely lake, oak/hickory woods, and restored prairie. We’ll hike through woodlands and be on the hunt for early season spring wildflowers, and stop every so often to talk about nerdy nature facts along the trail. After our hike, we will gather at a shelter for hot tea and PIE!
About the pie, from Kristen at Pie Bird Pies: Mixed berry lavender crumble is our most popular spring pie! Raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries are paired with fresh lemon and lavender and blanketed by a buttery oat crumble. It's the perfect hint of floral sweetness with lots of gorgeous berries. For me, this pie evokes sunshine and flowers peeking up through the leaves. Each slice will be served with a scoop of vanilla bean mascarpone whipped cream. Each piker will also get to enjoy the beauty (and taste!) of spring violets and pansies with flower-pressed shortbread cookies. These buttery, vanilla bean shortbread are topped with edible flowers and a dusting of sugar.
