SOLD OUT: DO Go Chasing Waterfalls - Minnesota’s North Shore

  • Tettegouche State Park 5702 Minnesota 61 Silver Bay, MN, 55614 United States (map)

To Superior’s spectacular North Shore we go! Northern Minnesota is famous for its roaring waterfalls hurtling toward Lake Superior, and we’re going to chase them all!

Homebased in one of Minnesota’s most picturesque state parks (Tettegouche here we come!), this trip will be a marathon of beautiful hikes in the north woods surrounded by rugged beauty, all in pursuit of some of the best waterfalls in the Midwest. We’ll be visiting at least four state parks and 10+ waterfalls, so get your boots laced and join us for this epic adventure!

This will be a hiking-intensive trip, but don’t worry — we’ll be winding down each night at camp on the shores of (maybe?) the greatest of Great Lakes. Due to the unique landscape of Superior’s north shore, formed by lava and volcanoes, many large rivers in the area run directly into the lake, making some of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls the Midwest has to offer. Set against the backdrop of spring wildflowers and animals emerging from hibernation, this is a wild adventure for any hiking lover!

This was one of our favorite trips of 2024, and we can’t wait to go back!

Adventure Rating: Beginner-Intermediate
This will be a hiking-heavy trip with plenty of elevation gain. Additionally, weather can be unpredictable on the north shore, but often passes quickly.

ACTIVITIES

  • Chase waterfalls with almost 20 miles of hiking at different parks and waypoints along Lake Superior’s north shore. Visits include Tettegouche State Park, Temperance River State park, Split Rock State Park and more!

  • Enjoy a relaxing happy hour at the beach (did you know Lake Superior has beaches?) as you take in the beautiful majesty of the lake and search for agates, a defining keepsake of the north shore.

  • Chow down one night on a Minnesota-themed camp dinner, featuring the favorite tastes of the north! Think wild rice soup, tater tot casserole, smoked fish and more!

ACCOMMODATIONS & LOCATION

We’ll be camping at the perfect central location for waterfall hopping, Tettegouche State Park! We will be staying at walk-in sites, which means we will be carting in all of our gear. The walk-in sites are roughly 100-200 feet from the parking area. Campsites will have walking access to pit toilets and water, and are a short drive from a showerhouse and flush toilets.

This trip was EXACTLY what I needed. Beautiful waterfalls, wonderful people, and a much-needed return to camping and wandering. We visited several waterfalls along the North Shore and did a lot of walking, but I never felt like I couldn’t rest and take a breather when needed. It was so great to explore this beautiful area on Lake Superior, and to connect with such amazing, hilarious women.
