Go in-depth at one of Central Iowa's most popular destinations! Many know Ledges for its great hiking and beautiful rock formations, but do you know the history of this geological wonder? Join us for a day of discovery during the park's quiet season! We’ll explore the Lost Lake area, learn all about the Des Moines River valley and important riparian zones, and the flora and fauna that thrive in these areas!
After our morning hike, we'll warm up at the Carl “Fritz” Henning Shelter and enjoy a delicious lunch of pie iron paninis cooked over a warm fire. Then we’ll depart for an afternoon hike, exploring the trails that meander through oak woods and down beautiful Canyon drive. We’ll talk about the unique geology of the park, highlighting the limestone bluffs that carve through the central part of Ledges, and share more nerdy nature facts as we hike along the trails. This is a perfect adventure to break the winter blues and discover the beauty of nature, even in the cold months!
