Knitting 101: Scarves & Cowls w/ Jen Geigley

Our first class in our Artists Series, we're so excited to bring this collaboration to life! The weather is cooling and you know what that means: we're getting crafty! In this workshop, you'll learn to knit your first scarf or cowl, perfect for cooler days and outdoor hikes! During the workshop, you'll learn the basics of knitting, how to cast on (start) and end projects, easy beginner stitches you can use to make many projects, and how to fix knitting mistakes. You'll walk away with a beautiful scarf or cowl (or at least the knowledge of how to finish your project, if you need more time!) and the confidence to try your own projects! This class if perfect for folks brand new to knitting and those with basic knitting experience.

Topics covered in this course:

  • Introduction / Supply overview

  • Learn to cast on

  • Learn the knit stitch

  • Practice and troubleshooting

  • Learn to bind off

  • Weaving in / seaming the ends 


Yarn for your project and knitting needles are provided in the registration cost. Simply show up ready to learn! We'll be learning around the campfire at Yellow Banks Park in Des Moines.

Registration is limited to 15 folks.

About your instructor

Jen Geigley is a knitter, author, knitwear pattern designer, graphic designer, and knitting instructor. West Des Moines, IA is the place she calls home, where she lives (and knits) with her awesomely wild and wonderful family. Her designs have been published in knitting magazines for the past 15 years, and she has written and self-published six knitting books. Jen loves teaching others to knit. She teaches knitting at several junior high and high schools in the metro, at yarn shops and knitting events all over the U.S. and is passionate about passing on the joy of knitting to others.
