  • Chain & Spoke 515 28th Street Des Moines, IA, 50312 United States (map)

$15-65

Learn basic bike mechanics with other women at the coolest new local coffee/bike shop in town! We’ll meet for 3 sessions to get us feeling prepared and confident on our bikes before summer and RAGBRAI. Sign up for one, two or all three sessions! We’ll have two in-shop bike maintenance classes at Chain and Spoke, taught by local bike mechanic Becca Corbitt, and for our final session will be a group ride on the beautiful Bill Riley Trail to get our trail legs under us and get comfortable with the basics of group riding! This series will help you feel confident about changing a flat tire, performing regular safety checks on your bike, maintaining and adjusting your brakes and shifters, and lots of other tips and tricks to keep your bike in top notch shape. This is a space for folks to learn about bikes, connect with other women in the bike community, and get prepared for biking season!

  • May 7th - Bike Maintenance 101 @ Chain and Spoke

    • Learn how to fix a flat, repair that dang broken chain, and get your bike running smooth and ready for the upcoming bike season!

Adventure Rating: Beginner
Each Wander Women event has an Adventure Rating attached (Beginner, Intermediate or Challenging) to give Wanderers a better idea of the activity level and physical requirements of the event. This Bite-Sized Adventure is rated at Beginner because the educational content and type of riding (for the group ride) are all beginner friendly! The first two classes will be indoors at a bike and coffee shop, Chain and Spoke, while the third lesson will be on a bike ride!

About Becca Corbitt:

I applied at REI in 2015 for a position in the bike shop knowing nothing!  Thankfully, they took a chance on me! I completed training with Barnett’s Bicycle Institute and was mentored by some of the best! At REI I helped start women’s specific bike maintenance classes.  I wanted to create an inclusive environment for “women” to learn about bikes, where all questions were welcome. I also have partnered with Black Girls Do Bike for classes and events.

I’m currently a part time restoration and education specialist at the Des Moines Street Collective.  I host W.T.F. night every other Wednesday 6-8pm.  (Open bench time - no curriculum but I’m there if you have questions or need help or just want to learn more about your bike). I also help out at the Downtown Farmers Market Bike Valet in the summer.

I’m usually roaming around on my road bike but also known to dabble in gravel and mountain biking. By no means a racer. I’m in it for the casual fun rides for nature viewing or friend shenanigans!
