Birds of Iowa Hike

Captain Roys/Birdland Trail, Des Moines, IA
Jan. 21 | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

$35

Winter is a fantastic time to see many birds that call Iowa home — and to learn about our bird friends that will soon be returning! Wake up with Wander Women for a morning full of bird-themed adventure along the Des Moines River, a hotbed of avian activity. We'll start the morning learning the basics of birding and Iowa bird families, then take off for a hike along the Birdland Trail, a paved path that runs along the Des Moines River, to spot as many birds as we can (while learning fun Iowa bird facts along the way). On our hike, we'll learn about the bird families that overwinter in Central Iowa and the notable species, and fun migration facts and the cycles of migratory birds that will soon return to Iowa.

After the hike, we'll gather at Captain Roys for a natural bird feeder making activity and learn more about birds and birding, like:

  • Feathers, anatomy of birds and bird evolution

  • How to get into birding

  • Bird ID tips & tricks

  • Where and when to bird throughout Iowa

If you've been interested in learning more about Iowa's amazing bird families and how to get into birding, this is the class for you! This class is perfect for Wanderers age 10+!

Registration is limited to 25 folks.

*Coffee, breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase from Captain Roys!
