A step up from our 101 trips, this camping intensive will throw you in the thick of all things outdoors — perfect for beginners and those looking to brush up on camping skills! Wander Women guides and state & county naturalists will lead you through a super interactive weekend that includes instruction on: Comfort while camping; camp cooking & food preparation; hiking; the ethics of Leave No Trace; Iowa plant & animal ID; beginner kayaking skills; fishing; foraging; fire starting; and planning a camping trip of your own! This trip is jam-packed!

  • Camping Details: Quiet tent-only camp area with primitive restrooms (pit toilet and no showers). There is a modern campground in the park that you can drive to that does have access to modern facilities (flush toilets and showers) .

  • Skills learned on this trip: Fire building and starting, hiking preparation & safety, camping preparation & safety, Leave No Trace, setting up and taking down tent, Iowa plant & animal ID, beginner kayaking, fishing, foraging

About Prairie Rose State Park

Prairie Rose State Park is a 422-acre park nestled in the scenic hills of southwest Iowa. The park is named after the small town, Village of Prairie Rose, which was once located near the park’s current location. The lake is the focal point of the park, and visitors enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities from hiking to boating, along with ice fishing in the winter. Source: Iowa DNR
